The history of Gomel State Medical University began in November 1990. On November 14, 1990, the Council of Ministers of the BSSR issued Decree No. 284, and on November 20, 1990, the Minister of Health of the BSSR issued Order No. 188. These directives aimed to train doctors and highly qualified specialists for the Gomel and Mogilev regions, which were heavily affected by the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster. As a result, the Gomel State Medical Institute was established in November 1990.
The Gomel State Medical University has five faculties: Medical, Medical Diagnostic, Foreign Students, Pre-University Training, and Advanced Training and Retraining. It has over 3,857 students, graduate students, and clinical residents. This includes 750 international students from 29 countries, who study in both Russian and English.
