Makerere University Uganda, the largest and oldest institution of higher learning, was initially founded as a technical school in 1922. It became an independent public university in 1970. Today, Makerere University has nine schools and one institute, offering programs to around 36,000 undergraduates and 4,000 postgraduates. It became a center for higher education in East Africa in 1935. By 1937, the college began transitioning into a higher education institution, introducing post-school certificate courses.
