The UGC offers doctoral scholarships to those who clear the National Eligibility Test Junior Research Fellowship.

History

  • The UGC (University Grants Commission) was first formed in 1945 to oversee the work of three central universities: Aligarh, Banaras, and Delhi.
  • In 1947, its responsibilities were expanded to include all Indian universities.
  • In August 1949, the reorganization of the UGC was recommended, inspired by the University Grants Committee of the United Kingdom.
  • This recommendation was made by the University Education Commission (1948–1949), chaired by S. Radhakrishnan, to report on Indian university education and suggest improvements and expansion.
  • In 1952, the government decided that all grants to universities and higher education institutions would be administered by the UGC.
  • The UGC was officially inaugurated on 28 December 1953 by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the Minister of Education, Natural Resources, and Scientific Research.The University Grants Commission became a statutory body of the Government of India in 1956 through an Act of Parliament.Its role includes coordinating, determining, and maintaining standards of instruction, examination, and research in university education.
